Boccaccio Cellars Pinot Noir tasting Feb 2015.

Ashton Hills Estate Pinot Noir 2013.
Quite a firm tight structure. Lovely deepish color, nose quite restrained with some forest and red fruits. Palate is long and tight. One for the cellar. 92/100 $45.00

Ashton Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2013.
More exotic wild red fruits on the nose and palate, more up front and open. Savoury and medium ripe. Great length and power. Drinks well now.  94/100  $70.00

Cappi Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2012.
Quite savoury and perfumed. Has a leafy vegetal herbal overtone which I don’t really like. Others may. 88/100  $25.00

Coldstream Hills The Esplanade Pinot Noir 2013.
Quite flat and awkward on nose and palate. Not showing any real Pinot character. May be going thru a weird phase. 86/100 $50.00

Curly Flat Macedon Pinot Noir 2012.
Lovely bright color, medium deep. Nose had cherry floral overtones and hints of smoky oak and forest. Palate continues on with smoky overtones. Oak had a medium char and is evident but subtle.  Lovely spice and great length. 96/100 $50.00

De Bortoli Estate Pinot Noir 2014.
Extracted weird herbal,  some fruit but very closed and dumb. 86/100 $20.00

De Bortoli Villages Pinot Noir 2013.
Hard green and extracted. Some fruit showing. Maybe needs some time. 88/100 $18.00

Dexter Mornington Peninsula  Pinot Noir2013.
Medium cherry red color, nose leaps forth with perfume and red cherry glace fruits. Palate is savoury and spicy with lovely length. Medium ripe and drinks well now. Really nice. 94/100 $40.00

Diamond Valley White Label Reserve Pinot Noir 2006.
Quite a developed wine, shows complexity with oodles of cow shed. Some people will like this, but not my style. 88/100 $40

Gembrook Hill Pinot Noir 2012.
Pure and estery nice, restrained, elegant, nice acidity and freshness. Fine grain tannins. A very delicate complex style. Excellent. 96/100 $52.00

Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir 2012.
Robust savoury style, good fruit and nice structure. Lovely spice and red fruits. Showing well. 92/100 $26.00

Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir 2011.
Very typical 2011. Herbal and weedy.  A tad green but still overall it has a nice savoury feel to it. Not bad. 86/100 $44.00

Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir 2013.
A more riper style than normal, dark fruits and spice and structure. Linear as per usual. Good. 90/100 $27.00

Mayer Granite Pinot Noir 2013.
From the Swallowfield vineyard. Spice and minerals in abundance. Lovely color and great length. Certainly walks on the mineral edge. Terroir at its best. Excellent. 95/100 $55.00

Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2013.
Quite a Burgundian style, savoury smoky, with spice and a subtle hint of oak. Some nice forest floor is well integrated. Classy for sure and a great drink.  96/100 $70.00

Unlabelled Macedon Top Paddock Pinot Noir 2014.
Deep color, very fruity up front fragrant nose. Palate has some nice weight and texture. Not bad for a $10 wine. 86/100

Wickhams Road Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2013.
Lovely color, fragrant open nose, nice mid palate structure, spicy with hints of earth. Nice wine and good value at $18.00 90/100

Dirty Three ‘Holgates Road’ 2013 Pinot Noir

The colour here is a delightfull cherry rhubarb, thick and viscous with some nice legs. Aromas run to the riper raspberry plum end of the spectrum. Spicy but a little confectionery in overall aromas. The palate carries thru with similar characteristics. 2013 was a warmer vintage with early drinking styles being more common place.  Ripe and sweet and a little simple and jammy for my taste. I watched this wine evolve over a few days. Too sweet and too ripe for me. $45. 88/100

Dirty Three Pinot Noir 2012-240x360

Attwoods Wines Old Hog 2012 Pinot Noir Geelong

Beautiful color and viscosity in the glass. Aromas of dark cherries, forest, and herbs and spices.  I get weird red capsicum herbaceous aromas which carry on to the palate. Palate is large scaled, dense and thick with smoky spice and heavy red fruits.  Stylistically this is a very interesting Pinot, but the herbaceous character is strange. The Chatto Pinot had similar aromas, maybe unripe whole bunch, unripe stems, proximity to trees or some other weird contamination is causing this. Shame – this would receive 5 extra points if not for this. 89/100.

Riorett 2012 The Abbey Pinot Noir

Color is a nice medium red – aromas are quite strange – plum and chocolate with prune overtones. Palate is similarly very ripe and full of plums and red fruits. Has cordial overtones – a very old fashion Yarra Valley style – which is not really what I am looking for. Lacks any real complexity to take it into a higher level. 90/100

Trapeze 2012 Pinot Noir

From a young Gruyere vineyard in the Yarra Valley.  Color is a medium red, nice viscosity in the glass. Aromas of spice and sour rhubarb and cherry.  The palate is long and luxurious – savory with hints of asian spices, citrus and berry fruits. Quite delicious. A really clever wine – not over-extracted – hints of small bunch and stems adds a nice backbone and structure to this rather nice Pinot. 93/100

Williams Crossing 2012 Pinot Noir

Lovely intense cherry red color,  aromas of asian spices, hint of smoky oak and red fruits. Savoury and expansive palate with nice texture and weight. Thick warm mouthfeel with lovely length – cherries and hints of rhubarb.  Not overly extracted with nice acidity and length. Classy wine for the money. 93/100

Oakridge Lusatia Park Vineyard Local Series 2012 Pinot Noir

[one-half-first]This is immediately different. From north facing red volcanic soils in Woori Yallock. Here we see a slightly deeper color – with more red berry fruits obvious on the nose and palate, Slightly rounder and less mineral in texture and less savory than the Guerin or Willowlake – but equally as enjoyable. Lovely length – sweet and ripe – but still in good balance. 94/100[/one-half-first][one-half]Local Lusatia Park YV Pinot 2012_front[/one-half]

Oakridge Willowlake Vineyard Local Series 2012 Pinot Noir

[one-half-first]This is from north facing red volcanic vineyard in Gladysdale – whereas the Guerin Pinot is from east facing grey volcanic soils in Gladysdale. The similarities to the Guerin are quite striking – here we see a little more lifted fruit and perfume – hints of cranberry  – maybe a little less minerality and a little more funk.  It is a tough call as to which is better. They are both remarkable wines and very similar. Very different to the Swallowfield Pinot. Lovely fine grain tannins keep everything in balance. 94/100[/one-half-first][one-half]Local Willowlake YV Pinot Noir 2012_front[/one-half]

Giant Steps Gladysdale 2012 Pinot Noir

[one-half-first]30% whole bunch and remainder destemmed but not crushed. Lovely viscosity and weight in the glass. Not dark or purple, cherry red with hints of brown on the edges. Nose shows is cool climate Upper Yarra Valley heritage. Cherry fruits with hints of briary spice – lifted perfumed aromas of smoke and raspberry . Nice acidity and structure with a hint of tannin keeping everything in balance. Lovely width and length. Very precise and concise. An enjoyable classic style. Drinks well now but has the potential to age for 3-4 years. Not a dark over extracted monster – think finesse – elegance -spice -smoke – saline – mineral. Terrible label – more like a beer label! 13.0%  94/100  $45[/one-half-first]12-gs-gladysdale-pinot-noir-web[one-half][/one-half]
